Morris Jenkins, Jr., was born on November 18, 1966 in Beaumont, Texas to Lillian and Morris Jenkins, Sr. He attended public schools in Beaumont and furthered his education at Prairie View A & M University, where he received both Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Agricultural Science. He was later employed by Texas A&M University as a Director of Urban Horticulture for nine years. He is married to Marsha Elaine Palmer Jenkins and they have two sons, Keeon and Jarrett. The foundation for his spiritual beliefs began with the teachings he received at Lacy Temple Church of God in Christ in Beaumont, Texas under the leadership of Pastor A. L. Lacy. He realized early in his youth the call that existed upon his life. As he had already received a very thorough background on the importance of sanctification, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and the Lord's call to the ministry at the age of 19.
In 1989, he was led to unite with Ellis Memorial Church of God in Christ in Houston, Texas under the leadership of the late Pastor Emeritus Frank J. Sherrard, Sr. Pastor Sherrard taught him the importance of being an effective administrator and a declarer of the truth to God's people. In 1990, he was licensed to preach and in 1991, became an ordained Elder in the Church of God in Christ under Bishop N. H. Henderson of the Texas South Central Jurisdiction. Pastor Sherrard also encouraged him to continue his educational training in ministry. As a result, he received a Masters of Divinity in 1996 and a Doctorate of Ministry in 1999 from Houston Graduate School of Theology.
Pastor Jenkins was loyal to his Pastor and continued to work faithfully and diligently under his leadership. Upon Pastor Sherrard’s retirement in May, 2002, he was installed as Pastor of Ellis Memorial. As a servant of the church, Pastor Jenkins is involved in many aspects of Christian ministry. He is currently the Superintendent of the Northwest Houston District of the Texas South Central Jurisdiction. In November, 2007, he was elected to the position of Executive Secretary to Presiding Bishop P. E. Bryant, Sr., of the Texas South Central Jurisdiction. He has traveled to Central America with missionaries to experience various facets of foreign mission service. His ministry is focused in three areas: evangelism, discipleship, and worship. The Lord has blessed him with various spiritual gifts such as teaching, counseling, the ministry of helps, and the ability to coordinate as well as organize church and community events.
His vision as Pastor of Ellis Memorial Church of God in Christ “The Haven of Hope” is to provide the East Houston communities of Clinton Park, Fidelity, Pleasantville, and Galena Park with a church that addresses the needs of at-risk families who are un-churched or nominal church members. This vision will be accomplished through focused worship events, fellowship activities, and evangelism. In order to integrate new believers into the Ellis Memorial church family, a process of assimilation was developed entitled "The New Believer's Course". This process will guide new member's spiritual growth and development. Another aspect of Pastor Jenkins' vision is to provide a loving Christian community of believers by modeling the life of Christ through Holy living. This goal will be accomplished through biblically based teaching, nurturing, and equipping believers to reach their full potential in Christ. Since becoming Pastor of Ellis Memorial, Pastor Jenkins has instituted new programs and community events and enhanced existing programs, such as a Senior Citizens Day, a Community Health Fair, Socks for Kids and School Supplies for needy children, a nursing home sponsorship, distribution of food baskets to needy families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and is currently coordinating other events and programs which will be beneficial to the church and community.
The church has purchased several additional church vans to enhance and extend its bus ministry. Also, the church has acquired additional property and is in the process of acquiring other properties to expand it’s current facilities. Ellis Memorial continues to be blessed both spiritually and materially under Pastor Jenkins’ leadership.
We can truly say that we have been led through the years by the spirit of God.
